miRNAs are particularly promising candidates for the study of developmental regulatory changes through evolution. While they have the power to regulate large numbers of genes and signaling pathways through development, it is unclear whether changes in miRNA targets and functions play a role in evolution or instead are uniquely regulated in different lineages. To address this question in the deuterostome lineage I have established the direct-developing hemichordate Saccoglossus kowalevskii, which shares a common ancestor with vertebrates, as an experimental model for discovering changes in the developmental roles of ancestral microRNAs.
