A test for extra-environmental patchiness in plankton Book uri icon

  • We describe a statistical method for determining whether patchiness in the plankton can be explained by environmental variations alone by using images taken by the Video Plankton Recorder (VPR) and concurrently measured water properties. The images of organisms are treated as events of a Poisson process with a rate function dependent on environmental variables. The resulting model estimated from observations is analyzed to ascertain if the environmental variables can solely describe the distribution of the organism. This method is applicable to data from imaging and sensing systems that detect the presence and absence of an individual.
