Demonstrating the feasibility of the open-ocean aquaculture of blue mussels (mytilus edulis) in rhode island sound Book uri icon

abstract

  • Researchers at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution have initiated a two-year offshore aquaculture demonstration project. The project is designed to test the biological, engineering, and economic feasibilities of growing the blue mussel (Mytilus edulis) on a submerged longline in an open ocean environment. The project is a collaboration between WHOI, a nonprofit academic research institution, and BlueGold, a for-profit mussel harvesting and processing firm based in New Bedford, Massachusetts.
