Panel 5: Chemical processes at the ocean bottom Book uri icon

  • Marine chemists who study processes at the ocean bottom are working toward two general goals. The following summary groups research directed toward these goals into four areas: (1) examination of reactions occurring in the immediate vicinity of the sediment-water interface; (2) examination of reactions producing hydrothermal fluids emanating from the ocean floor; (3) expanding our knowledge of the composition and dynamics of the organic matter found in marine sediments; and (4) enhancing our ability to use the sedimentary record to determine past variations in the Earth's climate and in ocean chemistry.
