Coleman, Maureen Whitman Center Scientist, Whitman Center

Positions

Maureen Coleman grew up in Auburn, (upstate) New York and received a B.A. in Biology from Dartmouth College in 2002. In 2008, she earned a Ph.D. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from MIT, working with Penny Chisholm on the abundant marine cyanobacterium, Prochlorococcus. She then did postdoctoral work with Dianne Newman at MIT and Caltech. She is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of the Geophysical Sciences at the University of Chicago and a member of the Committee on Microbiology and the Committee on Evolutionary Biology. Her lab investigates the causes and consequences of microbial population diversity, including phage-host interactions. She has also initiated a large-scale comparative microbial time series across the Laurentian Great Lakes.
